How to Use Chair Armrests Correctly

Armrests can cause or cure shoulder pain depending on how you use them. Here's the correct way to set them up.

Most people set armrests too high, forcing their shoulders up toward their ears and creating trapezius tension. The correct height lets your elbows rest at a relaxed 90 degrees with your shoulders down and away from your ears. Armrests should only support your elbows during breaks — not while typing. If your armrests don't adjust or they get in the way of pulling your chair under the desk, remove them and use a keyboard tray instead.
