Three primary mechanisms contribute to eye strain at the desk:

1. Implement the 20-20-20 Rule
This is the gold standard for preventing accommodative spasm. Every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for exactly 20 seconds. This 20-second break allows the ciliary muscles to relax completely. Do not spend this 20-second break looking at your phone. Use a timer or app to enforce this habit until it becomes second nature.
2. Master Your Lighting Environment
Your monitor should not be the brightest light source in the room, nor should it be placed directly in front of a bright window (creating a silhouette effect) or directly behind one (causing glare). The ambient lighting in your workspace should be about half as bright as that typically found in most offices. Position your monitor perpendicular to windows, and use an anti-glare screen protector if you have a glossy display.
3. Calibrate Display Settings
Adjust your monitor's settings to reduce strain:
- Brightness: Match the brightness of your screen to your surrounding workspace. If you hold a white piece of paper next to the screen, they should look equally bright.
